Celebrate your POP!

Happy Father's Day

This Sunday we celebrate those who held the hand of those that brought us into the world. This Sunday we celebrate Father's Day!

And while Mother's Day has a long and storied history, Father's day was simply introduced to compete with complement Mother's Day. The first recorded Father's Day was celebrated on July 5, 1908 in West Virginia and was actually done in remembrance  of the more than 200 fathers who were killed in a local mining disaster.

The holiday enjoyed mixed exposure as congress repeatedly shut down attempts by President Coolage and Senator Margaret Chase Smith to make the day a national holiday until President Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Today, the holiday is celebrated around the world, mostly on the third Sunday of May, and we at Popcorn Palace would like to wish all the Dad's out there a Happy Father's Day!

From Your Valentine

On the 14th of February every year, we give those we love or like a lot gifts (like popcorn and flowers) to celebrate Valentine's Day.

The origin of the celebration is a little contentious, but the most common story is that of Saint Valentine, a priest who lived during the rule of Emperor  Claudius - or Claudius the Cruel as he has come to be known. During this conflict-filled time, marriage had been banned so that Claudius could fill his army with single, unwed men. Enter Saint Valentine. He, along with Saint Marius, decided that this wasn't a fair practice and, in a direct act of rebellion, started to marry in-love Christians. As a result of his disobedience, Claudius had Valentine executed on February the fourteenth. Just before his death, Valentine is said to have written a note to the jailer's daughter, with whom he'd become close, and signed off with, "From Your Valentine."

Years later, in the Middle Ages, young people in Britain would celebrate the death of the martyr by putting their names into a bowl and drawing out the name of their valentine. This tradition too, had its origins in Rome:
"On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry."

So while you might not be pulling your love's name out of a jar, your love is sure to like pulling some popcorn out of a tin. Check out our selection of love-filled popcorn Valentine's gifts and hopefully, if you're lucky, your Valentine will share!

And if you want to win some popcorn of your very own, enter our Valentine's contest.

Popcorn: A love story

"Popcorn Palace popcorn has been there during two HUGE events in our life."

The happy couple
"On a weekend back in October of 2006, I planned to meet my girlfriend, Carrie, at the Columbus Airport for what was going to be a pretty routine weekend (or so she thought). We spent most of 2006 and 2007 living apart (me in NY and her in Ohio) as she pursued her Grad degree and I continued my career in New York City. She greeted me just outside of the security checkpoint, which is where I told her that we had to get to baggage claim soon or else we were going to miss our flight. I still remember her looking at me as if I was crazy. It was then I told her that we needed to get my checked bag as soon as possible because we were headed to Chicago for the weekend.

Love at first site!
It was in Chicago that very weekend where I asked her to spend the rest of her life with me. Needless to say, she said yes. We spent Saturday night at Navy Pier, which is where Popcorn Palace came into the picture. We stumbled upon the store in the shoppes at Navy Pier and immediately knew we found something special. We must have tired five or six different flavors before settling on "Cookies and Cream" and "Chocolate Drizzle Carmel Corn." Both flavors were amazing and we ate so much that neither of us was hungry for dinner or even breakfast the following day.

Romantic snacking
Fast forward a year and a half and we were in the thick of planning our wedding. One of our ideas was to create a Candy Buffet for our guests. We handpicked each of the items to represented something in our relationship. It was a no brainer that the star of the Candy Buffet table was the same flavors of Popcorn Palace popcorn that we had in Chicago during the weekend of our engagement!

The expectant couple
Popcorn Palace popcorn has been there during two HUGE events in our life, so its only fitting that we will have some on hand for another special event - the birth of our first child. Our baby girl is due in November - just around Thanksgiving and we have no doubt that there will be some Popcorn Palace popcorn on hand once again!

Thank you for some amazing popcorn and even better memories!"

POP! Fest on Hop-Cast!

Roughly 100 people showed up at Warrenville's Rock Bottom Brewery on July 10, 2010 for the inaugural POP! Fest in which a brand-new, one of a kind beer was unveled. Made with our popcorn, POP! Popcorn Malt Liquor Beer was a HUGE success.

This great event was reviewed by the very popular beer video podcast, Hop-Cast:

"Davin Bartosch decided to have an event and invite other local brewers to bring a beer to be paired with popcorn. Many local breweries brought different styles of beer that were paired with one of the many flavors that Popcorn Palace’s gourmet popcorn offers."

Our Father's Day Popcorn Winners!

CONGRATULATIONS!
The following popcorn lovers won popcorn for their Dads this Father’s Day.

Recently, Popcorn Palace ran a contest to celebrate fathers across the USA where entrants entered to win a tin of gourmet popcorn via Twitter (@popcornpalace) and Facebook. To win, they had to tell what made their Dads great and why their father’s deserved the gift of popcorn.

Here are our five wining entries (In no particular order):

Barbara Wright: I want to give my Dad the gift of popcorn because he can fix anything. And not only can he fix stuff, but he doesn't give me a hard time for not learning how to do it myself!

Lisa Wolter Anderson: I want to give my Dad/Father the gift of popcorn because he has been my rock since my Mom passed away 24 years ago. He is always there for me through thick & thin! He has also become the father figure for my 9 yr old since her father is not in the picture. My Dad always thinks about other people before himself. I have many great memories growing up and he would be making popcorn on the weekends with an old kettle popper.

Joanne Schultz: I want to give my Dad the gift of popcorn because he's worked hard all his life to provide for his family, sent 2 kids to college, maintained their house and cars, so he deserves a treat!

@2boysblue: My dad deserves #poppalace because he is such a sweetie and loves his munchies and movies.

Julie Jones: I want to give my dad the gift of popcorn because he's a movie freak and loves popcorn. And for me these two things just go hand in hand. Mmm. Thanks!

Well done to our winners. We sure hope your Dads shared their delicious gourmet popcorn with you!

Lisa Wolter Anderson: "My Dad loved the tub of popcorn that I won for him for the Father's Day contest. Thank you so much!"

Celebrate your fathers!

Father's Day started as a purely American holiday, first suggested by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1909. As she sat in a Spokane, Washington church listening to a sermon on Mother's Day, she thought to herself, "Why aren't fathers recognized with their own special day?"

Two years after the first Mother's Day observance in West Virginia, Dodd approached Spokane's ministers, who embraced the idea along with members of the local YMCA. She suggested a date of June 5th, three weeks after Mother's Day, as it was her father's birthday. The ministers suggested a later date of June 19 in order to adequately prepare the appropriate sermons for their congregations.

While trying to promote a national observance of Mother's Day, newspapers across the nation also carried the story of Dodd's proposed holiday. Political leader and orator William Jennings Bryan, who also supported Mother's Day, was quick to endorse Dodd's efforts. However, the all-male Congress was hesitant to follow in his footsteps, believing that making the day official would seem too self-congratulatory. The idea of a day set aside to recognize fathers was also met with a measure of derision and jokes.

Slowly, the idea of a special day of recognition for fathers became more popular. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson took part in the observance, and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that states hold their own observances. In a letter to all the state governors, he noted that "the widespread observance of this occasion is calculated to establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children, and also to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations."

However, the federal government was slow in making it a national holiday, even after Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote to Congress in 1957, recommending that if it did not recognize fathers as it did mothers, than neither parent should get their own special day. She did not mince words, writing "Either we honor both our parents, mother and father, or let us desist from honoring either one. But to single out just one of our two parents and omit the other is the most grievous insult imaginable."

Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day, a day to honor all fathers. In 1972, President Richard Nixon legally made it a permanent national holiday. It is now observed on the third Sunday in June in 55 countries around the world. Similar observations are held elsewhere on different days. Although celebrated in a variety of different ways, what Father's Day means around the world is celebrating family and honoring the men who are a part of that.
